Poker Games for PC

23 Aug 2010

We are getting to that point in time where nearly everyone you know has a computer or laptop, and many people have grown up with one or the other. This has meant that we have had many changes in the way family life operates. It used to be that you learned how to play cards around a table with your parents and siblings. Now it’s a case of sitting in front of a screen with digital versions of playing opponents. That’s why there are so many poker games for PC users. Plus it stops dad front cheating and making the rules up as he goes along. It may have taken something away from family life but has it made us better card players?

Obviously the answer is both yes and no because while we may know the game better it does mean we don’t really play the opponent, only the cards. Now that is a good thing if you are the type of person that is leaking tells with every shuffle of the deck. It’s not so good though if you haven’t got a clue about the chances of winning with the cards in your hand.

Ultimately the game of poker is intended to provide pleasure and if you think it’s about winning money then you’d be wrong. Ask any outright casino going poker player if he’s ever happy when he wins and they might say yes. A true poker playing addict though well tell you no. They are only happy when they’re broke because then they can leave the table.

Nobody plans on getting that deep in to it so it’s sensible to play poker in the comfort of your own home with plenty of poker games for PC’s around. If you need a bit of inspiration or if you want a challenging game instead of having to supply your little ones with endless chips then try ‘Chris Moneymakers World Poker Championships’. Moneymaker was a renowned player and World Poker Series winner from Nashville and he put his name to this title.

This game is good because it adjusts its speed to suit your game play. So if you are a super fast decision maker then you won’t be left waiting for the table. It has to be worth a look for that reason alone. It also has a fairly decent AI which doesn’t check every hand that you check. That can be really annoying and lots of games fail at that hurdle. Programmers find it hard to grasp that a different tactic should be employed if your opponent seems uncertain of their hand at certain points.

The problem that people coding the Artificial Intelligence engines have, is that they are trying to write a program that can learn about the opponent they are playing. They have to tell the computer player to react a certain way to a series of actions from their opponent. This is obviously very hard because they are taking on the human brain. However good a computer is at number crunching, they can’t learn and adjust as well as people.

Another very good example and probably one of the best poker games for PC systems you’ll come across is Hoyle Poker Masters. This game goes way back but is still one of the best products ever from Sierra Entertainment. There’s a good selection of characters to play against and they all have their own sayings which can be truthful or bluffs, you may never know which.

There are also a variety of poker games that you can play if you fancy a change from the good old Hold’em. There’s Omaha Hold’em, 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo and Cincinnati to name just a few of the twelve styles included. The game may be a little older than many around today but the graphic presentation is still pretty good too. Also the adequately pacey game play means you are not left out too much if you decide to fold early at any point.

If you aren’t up to pace with poker games yet, there is a title out there that can help you along and give you a nice little introduction. The name of the game is Poker Simulator from Iceberg Interactive. This is good for the beginner because it has a decent training mode. It can even give you instruction on how to read people. If you ever intend playing face to face poker then reading people is a very big part of the game. The downside of this software is that it can become laborious because the endless menu items asking you to check, bet or fold. The game just isn’t as smooth as others on the market.

So when you are deciding what poker games for PC systems might be right for you, you may want to ask yourself what you want from it. If like most of us you want something that’s fun to play then go for something simple and fast. This will give you more reason to stay for that extra hand every time you sit in front of your screen.
